One of the biggest industries providing livelihood to millions of farmers, accounting for one of the largest producers of milk in the world, India is influential to the economy of the country. The initiatives taken by the Government in this regard helped in the development of the sector and farmers and allowed this industry to thrive and sustain. So, in this blog, we will be discussing the importance of the dairy industry in the economy and the measures the Union government took to support the industry.

The Dairy Industry

Contribution to GDP and employment: Since India is the largest producer of milk in the world dairy farming stood as the backbone of agricultural activity. The advantage of this business is that it provides dairy farmers, but also generates jobs in every unit like milk processing, transport, and retail, which benefit even the nation’s economic system itself.

Challenges faced by the Dairy Industry: As the largest industry (in India) is dairy, many challenges are also included. Many farmers are less aware of proper nutrition and care for their cattle which can result in low milk productivity. Inadequate contemporary infrastructure such as cold storage or advanced process units will lead to waste Milk. Another challenge is that rural farmers cannot get a fair price for their dairy production. Higher temperatures are known to be detrimental to milk production, resulting in poor productivity.

A significant issue faced by farmers in the dairy industry is keeping prices affordable for consumers but also making sure farmers are compensated appropriately for their products. By lowering the prices, the consumers are lured into purchasing the products but at some point, this ends up leaving the farmers with low profit margins.

These are the subsidized and funded support:The government can offer farmers subsidized loans with which they can purchase the equipment necessary to develop better farms and processing units. Hygiene and sanitation initiatives also improve the quality of their milk and other dairy products as well as better veterinary care for the cattle.

Market Expansion:  It is helping Indian brands get a foothold abroad through various initiatives so that Indian high-quality milk and dairy products can occupy a place in the international market. It is also helping small farmers and cooperatives to gain access to bigger markets, enabling them to sell their products in India and abroad with more ease.

Conclusion:  India’s Government has a major role in developing and promoting the dairy sector. The dairy industry was booming as farmers were resorting to various schemes, subsidies, modern technology, etc to produce good quality milk and increase income.
